I. anything but：根本不

  1. 意思是「根本不」、「一點也不」、「絕對不」。
  2. 聯想：but當介係詞時，有「除…之外」的意思，所以可聯想成某人什麼都是(anything)，除了(but)某特質之外，組合起來就是「某人根本就沒有某特質」，推論出anything but是「根本不」、「一點也不」、「絕對不」之意。
  3. 同義詞：not … at all (一點也不)

 

No one in this class is interested in the puzzle but the clever boy.

(這個班上沒有人對這個謎題感興趣，除了那個聰明的男孩。)

→ but是「除了」之意，等於except for

 

Julia is very stingy; she is anything but a generous person.

(Julia很吝嗇； 她絕不是一個慷慨的人。)

→ anything but是「絕對不」的意思

II. nothing but：僅僅

  1. nothing but意思是「僅僅」。
  2. 聯想：but當介係詞時，有「除…之外」的意思，所以可聯想成什麼都不(nothing)，除了(but)某事情之外，組合起來就是「什麼都非，除了某某事外」，因此只有這特質算數，推論出nothing but是「僅僅」之意。
