despite 用法是什麼呢？和 in spite of是「儘管」、「不管」的意思，和although、though(雖然)相同，都是表達「讓步」，但用法大不同，可以分成二組來理解。

1. despite與in spite of是介系詞，後面最常見的就是加名詞。

Despite the pouring rain, the football game went on.

(儘管下著傾盆大雨，足球比賽仍在繼續。)

→ despite + 名詞 the pouring rain

In spite of the wrestler’s determination and training, he couldn’t beat his opponent.

(儘管摔角選手的決心和訓練，他還是無法擊敗對手。)

despite/in spite of ＋動名詞V-ing

1. despite與in spite of是介系詞，後面連接動詞時，要改成動名詞V-ing。
2. 注意，在這句型中despite不須寫出主詞，因為預設值是二句的主詞相同才可以省略，所以這句型只限用於主詞相同時。

Despite having eaten three bowls of noodles, the man still felt hungry.

(雖然吃了三碗麵，但這人還是覺得餓。)

→ despite + 動名詞 having eaten

→ (X) Despite the man having eaten noodles, his stomach was empty.

In spite of rejoicing at his victory, the table tennis player kept practicing hard for the Olympics.

1. despite與in spite of是介系詞，後面可以先接名詞符合需求，再接that名詞子句當the fact同位語，說明它的內容。
2. 注意，在這句型中只要寫出the fact that後，名詞子句不限制主詞，任何句意都可以。

Despite the fact that sugar is harmful to health, many people still love sugary food.

(儘管糖對健康有害，但許多人仍然喜歡含糖食物。)

→ despite that fact that + S + V意為「儘管某事」

In spite of the fact that recycling reduces the amount of trash, many households don’t take it seriously.

despite用法 與although比較

1. 從詞性來看有助於理解。despite和 in spite of是介系詞，後面接名詞、動名詞或the fact ＋that子句。
2. although和though是連接詞，必須連接子句。
3. 二組都不可再加but。

Although the weather is scorching hot, the girl wears thick clothes.

= Despite the scorching hot weather, the girl wears thick clothes.
